Hurry up and let us discriminate, Governor (D!) tells courts
(Des Moines, Iowa) Iowa Gov. Chet Culver (D) says that the state Supreme Court should expedite its ruling on same-sex marriage. And he said that if the court should uphold a lower court ruling that struck down Iowa's ban on gay marriage he will press the legislature to speed through a constitutional amendment.

The governor also suggested that if the court delays its ruling until after the legislature adjourns he may call a special session to deal with the amendment.

"We'll do whatever it takes to protect marriage between a man and a woman," Culver told the Associated Press.

Six same-sex couples filed a lawsuit in challenging a state law that limits marriage to opposite-sex couples.

2. Yes, because straight marriage went to hell in a handbasket in MA
:sarcasm:

Those bigoted wingnuts need to go buy a clue. The only thing straight marriage needs "protection" from is adultery and divorce. Maybe they should ban them instead of same-sex marriage.

3. With D*'s like him, no wonder we are always getting thrown under the bus
And no wonder Obama won Iowa - his homophobic act must've played well there, too.

7. GAWD it's good to be on a sub-forum where you can say this...
...without catching an "ALERT" from some Obama supporter with their hand poised over the button, and "RACIST! RACIST! RACIST!" saved on Notepad, ready to paste in.

Why is homophobia the last acceptable prejudice?

8. it is nice
Religious intolerance, fear, and lack of understanding is what makes it acceptable to some still.

9. Humans are the only species that could ever come up with that kind of rationalization.
And we wonder WHY the aliens haven't landed. After monitoring us for a while, would YOU?

10. Because it's supported by people's "deeply held religous beliefs"
So that makes it not only acceptable, but untouchable to many. I mean, how dare we criticize people's religious beliefs? :sarcasm:

They forget that racism was supported by "deeply held religious beliefs" not that long ago. In the case of the Christian Identity Movement, it still is.

Bigotry is bigotry, and it's all wrong no matter what it's supported by. There's no justifying it, and even religion must be open to criticism if it's being used to hide bigotry.

4. What about the married couple in Iowa?
Don't they have a due process argument if their marriage is somehow deemed invalid by the legislature?

5. Just wait for NH or NJ or another state to completely put any marriage on par,
regardless of the gender dyad involved, then the "Full faith and credit" clause of the Constitution comes into play: then comes the test cases! Then watch how the USSC rules on black letter constitutional law. I can't wait myelf for the test case to wind its way forward! If for no other reason, to see how "unenlightened" the briefs will be!

13. He doesn't support civil unions either
From http://www.radioiowa.com/gestalt/go.cfm?objectid=AE246DCF-226C-4F31-83D33483B52DBDEA :

Toward the end of the debate, the candidates were asked to simply respond "yes" or "no" to several questions, including whether they support a state law that would allow for "civil unions" that give legal recognition to gay or lesbian relationships. Both Ed Fallon and Mike Blouin said they backed civil unions, while Chet Culver said he opposed civil unions.

14. Par for the Democratic Party's course
When Clinton and Obama put in so much effort to oppose full, equal marriage, who is a mere governor to do otherwise?
