Gay Adoption Ban Bill Expected As Tennessee Lawmakers Return
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon08/01/010808ten.htm

Tennessee lawmakers returned to the legislature Tuesday with Republicans threatening to take up a bill that would bar gays and lesbians from adopting or serving a foster parents.

Democrats hold a 53-46 advantage in the House, while the two parties are tied at 16 each in the Senate, with one independent.

In an election year both parties are jockeying to find issues on which to campaign.

An attempt to pass legislation banning gays from adopting failed in 2005.

1. Nice.
Make my family an "issue" to campaign on. I thought we had moved into the 21st century.

3. 'm so glad to be a "campaign issue" - it really gets old doesn't it?
They don't give one flying fuck for those kids, in spite of what they say. It's all about how to get the bigots to vote. If they'd switch parties, they wouldn't need to run on hate and divisiveness.

4. Sadly I think we are going
to face this here as well. We had such a great year last year but the RWingers are going to push every button this year to undo all we have done and add something like this to all of that. We have no kind of numbers so it will take huge amounts of lobbying to stop anything. Our house is way over balanced against us. So is the Senate but we have some better luck there.

Good luck. I will watch this with interest and maybe get some pointers from what you all do to counter it. I really hope this does not come up for either of us. Freaking bigots.

6. One small question.
Would this include gay relatives in cases of parental death?

As in, if a couple were killed in an accident would it ban the newly orphaned children from being adopted by their gay aunt/uncle?

They always witter on about the interests of the children - but could somebody explain to me how this potential child is in any sense better off to be dragged away from their family to rot in a state orphanage?

8. I never even thought about that.
My husband and I left instructions that if something happened to us the boys were to go with their Uncle, my brother. I never even thought that it would not be allowed. Thankfully they are on their own now. Man, what a nasty mess this is.

9. I've wondered that as well
My sister named me guardian of her kids in the event anything happened to her (fortunately, the kids are now grown), with the desire that I adopt them.
