Poll: Only 55% of Americans would vote for a gay President (1% better than being divorced 3 times)
published Thursday, February 22, 2007

A new poll indicates that a majority of Americans would vote for a gay person if he or she were nominated for president.

The USA Today/Gallup survey released Feb. 16 found that 55 percent of respondents would vote for their party's gay or lesbian nominee if he or she were "generally well-qualified." A hypothetical gay pol polled better than one who had been married three times -- which only 54 percent of respondents found acceptable.

Given the wide range of backgrounds among the current and presumptive 2008 presidential contenders, the poll asked how willing Americans would be to vote for them.

Ninety-five percent of those polled would vote for a Catholic; 94 percent would vote for an African-American; 88 percent would vote for a woman and 72 percent would vote for a Mormon.

Only 42 percent said they would be "comfortable" voting for someone 72 years old -- which happens to be Sen. John McCain's age -- though another 15 percent could do it "with reservations."

<snip>

The only category to poll below 50 percent was "atheist."

1. Only? I'm actually shocked it was that high.
The rash of anti-gay marriage laws passed in the last few years -- many by wide margins -- had me convinced that vast swaths of the populace were utterly homophobic.

That said, figures the atheist comes in last. Can't have someone who relies solely on reason and critical thinking occupying the White House, can we? :sarcasm:

2. Only 55%? sure seems like a majority to me, but why not use that
in the headline? Hell, it's way more than Chimpy's job approval ratings right now, much less VP Evil

3. I thought the original headline was overly optimistic and cheery.
You see the glass as 55% full.

I see the glass as 45% bigoted.

4. I'm not sure what to say to that.

I guess 55% is nice because it's a majority, but I wonder if that figure would stand if the candidate was not white. 55% is still depressingly low.
And I must say, as an atheist, I find it awfully depressing that the majority of America still hates us.

....

mlegh.

7. But remember, it's the Christians that are being oppressed right now
Although 95% of the voters would support a Catholic.

8. I have to wonder....
How many people would be willing to vote for a presidential candidate who was both openly gay and openly atheist?

I guess I won't be running for US President any time soon.

10. Of course
Because Jesus strongly denounced homosexuality, but he never said anything about divorce. :sarcasm:
