Advertisements advocate for civil unions in Idaho
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=14870&sd=01/21/05

A gay rights group in Idaho took out advertisements in several statewide papers Thursday advocating civil unions, one of the first salvos in an expected legislative battle over what constitutes marriage. Jim Smith, cochairman of the group Your Family Friends and Neighbors, said the ad is part of a campaign known as "A Simple Matter of Equality." He said the ad was designed to prompt those who oppose same-sex marriage to examine why they feel the way they do.

1. I wish them luck, but
they'd have about as much chance of success if they tried it in Saudi Arabia.

2. Isn't Idaho the most conservative state in the nation?

I think I read that... somewhere... hang on... I'll find it.

Here, in a Utah newspaper.

3. I lived in Idaho for nine years
..and worked for The Idaho Statesman, one of the newspapers mentioned in the linked article.* Considering that Idaho is one of the reddest of the red states, the battle they face isn't just uphill, it's equivalent to climbing a vertical cliff face. That said, I wish them the best of luck.

(*They may have run the ad--which surprises me--but working there was one of the worst employment experiences I've ever had. I wouldn't wish working there on my worst enemy.)

4. It sucks to live here,
but as a contact of YFFN (I am president of Boise State University's BGLAD (Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Diversity) group, I am doing what I can to help with defeating this legislation.

The Idaho senate is currently debating an amendment to the Idaho constitution defining marriage. YFFN had someone introduce a bill to create civil unions in Idaho. In this way we can point to a vote for the gay marriage amendment, and against the civil unions bill as what it is...discrimination.

A lofty weapon that probably won't lead to anything, but we are embracing it nonetheless.
