Spitzer: Gay Rites Ahead
BY JACOB GERSHMAN - Staff Reporter of the Sun
January 5, 2007

By Day 365, Governor Spitzer will propose legislation legalizing gay marriage in New York, a top aide to the governor said yesterday.

The Spitzer administration moved to reassure gay-rights advocates that it wasn't backing down from a campaign promise to support a same-sex marriage bill. The governor did not address the issue specifically in his 61-minute State of the State address on Wednesday.

"The governor made a commitment to advancing it this year, and he will do so," Mr. Spitzer's communications director, Darren Dopp, told The New York Sun.

Gay marriage, however, isn't a Day One issue, he said. For now, the administration is chiefly concerned with pushing forward its ethics and economic agenda and is keeping the issue of gay marriage off the front burner. "We have to prioritize and that's how we prioritized," Mr. Dopp said. "That's not to say other matters are not important."

1. Great news, I was worried they'd follow New Jersey's lead

2. Depending on the text of this law...
My partner and I have discussed flying to NY to marry. We would then come back to CA and file a suit demanding recognition in CA under the 'full faith and credit clause' of the Constitution.

3. Why don't you go to MA now and marry and come back and sue CA?

Unless you have specific reasons of course.

Just wondering...

4. The MA law is affected by an older law meant for interracial marriages
Basically states that you can't be married there (MA) if your home state wouldn't recognize it. Otherwise we would have. It seems more likely that the NY law would be more open.

It may be moot by that point though. Equal marriage has already passed in the CA legislature once but was vetoed by 'moderate republican' Arnie (bastard). Mark Leno has reintroduced the bill and it may get a veto-proof majority this time. People also wonder if Arnie wouldn't veto it this time because he's not up for re-election. There is also a court case winding its way through the CA system that has (in my opinion) a fairly good chance of being decided in our favor.

Time is on our side. With each passing year the poll numbers become more favorable to marriage equality. I'm just tired of waiting.
