White Sox manager fined for 'fag' remark, will attend sensitivity training

Major League Baseball tapped the brakes Thursday on Ozzie Guillen when it levied separate penalties against the White Sox manager for two incidents.

Guillen accepted a one-game suspension that he served Thursday night and an undisclosed fine for the "internal actions" of reliever David Riske, who hit St. Louis' Chris Duncan in Tuesday's game after warnings had been issued to both teams.

But the suspension paled in comparison to the attention given to MLB's decision to fine Guillen and order him to attend sensitivity training for using a derogatory term for homosexuals directed at Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti.

"The commissioner (Bud Selig) did what was great for baseball," Guillen said while wearing street clothes in the Sox dugout three hours before their game with St. Louis. "Mariotti and his partners (whom Guillen maintains give Mariotti quotes) should be happy."

This is a complete slap on the wrist. Guillen will remain a homophobic asshole and will continue to conduct himself as one, I have no doubt. I have very little confidence that fines and penalties will force a bigot to no longer be a bigot. Just look at Marge Schott. :mad:

It just means one used a slur. Would have been okay if he had called Mariotti an asshole, which would have been more accurate.

Tell me...how many insults are there in the English language? Ballpark figure?

Now...given that there are quite a few, it's telling that Guillen used THIS PARTICULAR insult. Now, how many definitions are there for the word "fag"? I know of only two...British slang for a cigarette. Now, it would have been silly for Gullien to use THAT defintion of "fag" in the context of his insult to that reporter..."you fucking cigarette". Yes, that seems silly.

So, the other definition of "fag" is...well, you know. A nasty slur against gay men.

So...one would have to see in this context that Guillen has homophobic attitudes. There is no context, none whatsoever, in using the word "fag" in anything less than hate and bigotry.

8. The first time I remember hearing the word fag

I was in all of second grade. Due to my athletic ineptitude and a very mean gym teacher I was considered fair game to everyone. The teacher confined himself to wuss some of the kids used other names. I didn't know, and frankly the other kid probably didn't know, what the word meant. Soon that became a favorite taunt. I had an older brother so I soon learned what the word meant.

By middle school, I frankly thought my name was fag. By then, everyone knew what that word meant. Everytime I heard that word I would get a tight feeling in my stomach because I never knew just what it would be accompanied by. Maybe nothing, maybe a push, maybe I would get shoved into a locker, maybe a wedgie, or maybe I would literally get jumped. Who knew?

By highschool I had a protector so it stopped. Oh I might hear a muttered word but no more humiliation or beatings. Thankfully I outlasted the word.

In short, don't tell me fag is just another insult, and not a bigot's tool. I know better, as do a heck of a lot of others.

OK, I'm confused here. I overlooked your original post because I thought it was meant for the first person to reply to this thread, "the other one." But now this response to IntravenousDemilo makes me think that perhaps you were talking to me after all.

If your original post was not meant for me, then no worries. But please be aware of who you are flaming going forward, because I certainly didn't deserve that. If you were indeed directing your comment to me, then please provide a specific example of "bigoted stupidity" to me that I posted in this thread or anywhere in my journal. I will be glad to defend any bigotry that you feel I have written in my words.
