Famous Homophobes with Gay Offspring--Post 'em here!!!!!!!!!!!
My two entries: Slade Gordon, corrupt, right-wing former Senator from the state of Washington. He has a gay son with whom he hasn't spoken to in years.

Phyllis Schafley--Irritating, brain-dead witch who speaks out against outspoken women. Has a gay son with whom she is apparently on good terms, and he seems to be as self-loathing as she is.

The list goes on and on--go ahead, make my day--add some more!

:hi:

...not that he's at all open-minded, but she just impresses me as more hateful. Dickie's hateful, but will look the other way if it benefits him.

5. You might be right, joeybee12. I'm not in a big hurry to dine socially
with any of these folks any time soon, are you? I can see why you'd say that about Lynne Cheney.

Dick and Lynne give off a very chilly vibe next to say, John and Elizabeth Edwards.

22. Mate I just have to say this...
...I saw your thread asking about our gaydar. When I read the comments the one thing that crossed my mind was "what a bunch of hypocrites posting in this thread. Not you, those who blasted you.

Basically many of the same people do not begin defending someones sexuality when being gay is used as a negative. Let's start one saying Bush* is gay and all these same people will come in agreeing. But dare we start one about a hero and watch out.

And I really thought the left was meant to be better than the right! Go figure!

Good point, I said much the same thing in the body of the thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x31838#31903

The eye opener for me, and this little dust up was just one example, was that I notice more and more that some of our progressive "friends" quite often are just as in the dark as the religious rightwingers are. They mouth the right words at us, but deep down, they harbor the same prejudices and the same bigotries that the rightwing has.

His gay adopted son came out in a big way in one of the gay magazines a couple of years ago. Daddy Randy all but disowned him in public statements he made.

Here's a link to the story from the Washington Post:

30. I think he was.
In Congress, Bono said he loved his daughter, Chastity, and respected gay people, but could not accept the notion of gay marriage. "I'm not homophobic, I'm not a bigot, I'm not pandering to hatred," he said. "I simply can't handle it. It's nothing else."

Yet he could handle his own four marriages.

41. Personally, he had no problem with it...but at his death he and Chastity
were't on speaking terms. As you said, he was fine and very supportive when she came out (Cher, surprisingly, flipped out), but his career took precedent over the welfare of his daughter, and he was very supportive--as a U.S. congressman--of anti-gay causes and legislation. She tells of fights they had, and how angry she wass with him for his betrayal.

13. This has been rumored for years ...
... but supposedly at least one (and maybe two) of Fred Phelps' demon spawn is gay or lesbian. If I recall, Freddie has 10 kids, two of whom have rejected daddy dearest's homophobic teachings and left the cult.

Not that this is conclusive proof, but I've heard both of Freddie's rejects are single and one lives in San Francisco.

Maybe it's just conjecture and wishful thinking, but the thought of Fred going slowly mad wondering how something queer sprung from his withered hetero loins is oddly comforting.

I can't imagine even being straight and growing up in Phelps's little cult of hate. To be gay or lesbian and grow up with an evil demon like Fred for a father should earn that child immediate passage to paradise after this life.

Not sure if this fits here because it depends on how you'd classify Anne. Nancy tours the nation speaking with ex-gay groups claiming her prayers "cured" Anne of her homosexuality. Anne has denounced her mother for speaking at these events and said her split with Ellen was not because of a change in her own sexual orientation.

i have noticed other witches asking for mercy when witch is the word substituted, though. i think we deal with that as it happens, as it seems rare, so far. but then, these days... hmmm
