Allow me to share with you an epiphany. I think Fred Phelps is gay.

Not that I'd have any way to know for sure, and not that there's anything wrong with that. But it seems obvious to me that Freddie has spent a little time up on Brokeback Mountain, if you catch my drift. I'm thinking he's secretly into show tunes, interior decorating and man-sized love.

Granted, that's not the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about the Fredster, who is defined by an apparently pathological hatred of all things homosexual. Perhaps you remember how his followers desecrated the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student who was beaten and left to die on a prairie fence in Wyoming eight years ago. They showed up at the funeral bearing signs that said, ``God Hates Fags.''

Now Phelps has updated his act. His ''thinking,'' if you want to use that word, is that the casualties of the Iraq war are divine retribution for this country's tolerance of homosexuality. So, he says, thank God for the IED's, improvised explosive devices, that have sent so many American soldiers home in dead and broken pieces.

3. I've thought that for a long time

Some of the outfits he wears - like a pink cowboy shirt - the double-breasted kind with the round-string-like border etched on it and then stitching above it in a fancy pattern, wearing one of those string ties, a cowboy hat, and then what looks like make-up (I've seen several pictures of him in an outfit like that), and he just screams that he's a former drag queen down on his luck.

4. I don't think anyone who screams and preaches against gays

is heterosexual. If they were they would shut up. The main thing to know is that he is a very sick man - and now his children are sick.

In Phelps case I would be willing to bet he was molested as a child by a man and someone he trusted - more than likely a care giver or a person in a position of authority and respect. Perhaps a scout leader, a preacher, a coach, teacher, grandfather, etc.

But frankly, I don't want to know what made him the way he is. Phelps on the other hand needs to know, acknowledge and ask for forgiveness of all those he has hurt. He is one sick motherf**ker.

13. Whether he is gay or not it is clear he is not comfortable with his own

sexuality. My hypothesis on the Phelps phenomenom is that he is probably mostly straight but had some kind of "experience" as a young man where he was sexually attracted to a man and it scared the crap out of him. I also suspect that for some reason (possibly being sexually abused as a child) in general he is not capable of real intimacy with anyone of either gender and the frustration and anger of that hurt causes him to lash out against gays. Whatever, he is one messed up dude. The thing I find genuinely puzzling is why his family members, particularly his daughters, support his "cause". I can only believe that he has some kind of hold over them - almost certainly psychological abuse if not physical/sexual abuse is involved, imo.
