The case is currently before the Court of Appeal where Attorney General Bill Lockyer is appealing a ruling in San Francisco last March where a judge said that it is unconstitutional for the state of California to deny marriage to gay and lesbian couples.
The broad support for gay and lesbian couples comes from groups as diverse as the NAACP, the California Council of Churches and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center.
Eight friend of the court briefs were filed by lawyers for the organizations late Monday.
