Local gay rights and AIDS activists are upset that “Justice Sunday III,” an event organized by the anti-gay Family Research Council, featuring U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) and Jerry Falwell, will be held Jan. 8 in Philadelphia.
The event will take place a day before Senate Judiciary Committee hearings begin for Supreme Court Justice nominee Samuel Alito. It will be held at the Greater Exodus Baptist Church in North Philadelphia, and feature the Rev. Herbert Lusk, a former adviser to President Bush.
The event is meant to “educate people of faith on how the judiciary impacts their lives and show how activist judges seek to end all mention of God in the public square,” according to the “Justice Sunday” Web site.
Stacey Sobel, executive director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights said the event is an important opportunity to show that the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well as other fair-minded people in the state will not stand for intolerance.
