The University of Florida trustees voted 12-1 last month to approve the benefits plan for the same-sex partners of employees. (story)
The decision made UF the state's only public university to approve such a policy, which also covers partners of unmarried straight couples. Married employees have long been able to insure their spouses.
Rep. Larry Cretul said his bill would not prevent the schools from using private funds to pay for the benefits. Cretul said he is not prejudiced.
