"I'm not sure how widely known my sexual orientation was. I never made any public statements about it, … but I didn't try to hide it either," Pierson said Thursday.

"The reaction I've received so far has been supportive. … I had some hesitation and a little fear," Pierson said during a telephone interview with the St. Cloud Times.

Pierson will remain a priest at the abbey, he wrote in the e-mail, but his new job has not been determined.

"It was a difficult decision (to resign). But I'm aware when I say something, it can reflect on both the university and the (St. John's Abbey). … And I don't want to create difficulties for either the university or the abbey."

What a brave and honorable man! He should be commended for his courage, not have his career ruined because of the homophobia of the leaders of the Catholic church.
