If Brokeback Wins Best Picture Oscar
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 12:24 AM by ruggerson
and Philip Seymour Hoffman wins best actor for "Capote", will we be entertained with the sight of Jerry Falwell having an embolism live on national television?

I'm just sayin'.

3. Maybe it would be all the excuse Falwell needs ...
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 01:54 AM by kweerwolf
... to join Tinky Wink and come out, announce he occasionally carries around a big red purse, and confess that he had the lavendar "triangle" thing removed from the top of his head.

I always figured Falwell's gay-dar was too good for a straight guy ever since he picked up on Tinky Wink and outed him.

(Pausing for a moment to savor the sounds of fundie heads exploding from coast to coast if Falwell ever announced he was "that way.")

4. They'll send the military to destroy Hollywood
and then every Freeper will cry themselves to sleep at night wishing they could have been a gay cowboy.

5. Geez, all the people at Freak Repugnant are having kittens *now*
And the movie's barely come out. If it wins awards they'll likely need triple bypasses . The servers over there will explode with the pure vitriol that will be flowing over there.

As to Falwell, Dobson, et al, they'll use it as another oportunity to garner funds for their "war on the gay agenda" no doubt. :eyes:

10. With a very unfunny skit
and a stupid quip on "Weekend Update" that she had to excuse by blaming her dad. You have more class than that, Tina, or so I thought. Just goes to prove how uncomfortable they were with the idea.

8. Nice idea, but it will never happen.
Not in Hollywood, it won't. I suppose it COULD get nominated, but it would never win.

9. I would bet it picks up at least 4 nominations and wins one Oscar ...
... most likely for director Ang Lee who, after Sense and Sensibility and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is overdue for Oscar recognition (unless the decide to hold The Hulk against him).

Unless votes are largely split in the main categories, I think you are right about the chances of it winning any of the acting Oscars or best picture.

As they say in H'wood ... "It's an honor just to be nominated." So the Academy will "honor" the movie with a few nominations just to keep it's indie/liberal street cred without really having to take much of a stand and give Lee a well-deserved dircting honor while he's at the top of is game.

11. Saw it last night - very well done.
Though Ledger's performance was sort of "stiff" :D though that may have just been the way his character was supposed to be. Gyllenhaal deserves a nomination. There were a couple other bit players who really shined (like his parents). I'd like to see it get a nomination or even a win, but I'm not sure - who knows, I could be wrong, after all. :hi:

13. Here's the link
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/12/121305globes.htm

The cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" led Golden Globe contenders Tuesday with seven nominations, among them best dramatic picture and honors for actors Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams and director Ang Lee.

The Golden Globes are considered a clue into how the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will vote in the Oscars.

Two years ago, the Golden Globes correctly predicted winners in all key Oscar categories. However, a year ago, the Globes missed the mark, picking The Aviator as best picture, an honor that went to Million Dollar Baby at the Oscars.

The Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Winners will be announced Jan. 16, five days before polls close for Oscar voters.

14. the movie will pick up some awards
and that's a major accomplishment in itself

10 years ago, this movie couldn't get made, or however long it was

no actor would touch the parts and now, it's a major movie winning all kinds of awards

15. It's great that it's winning awards. Perhaps big-name actors won't be so
afraid to take on gay roles now, if the script calls for it.

16. what I like, and please don't flame me for it
is that these are non-sterotypical gay roles

these aren't AIDS victims or the nelly queens or whatever

roles like those in Brokeback are important because they show people who buy into the stereotypes that the gay community is diverse

19. Yes
because a lot of even progressive people think "I know what gays and lesbians look like/act like" but they don't.

The diversity in the our community is shocking to me, sometimes.

I haven't seen Brokeback but I do look forward to seeing it soon.
