http://www.365gay.com/Newscon05/12/120705alaHate.htmLess than a week after Alabama's largest LGBT civil rights organization called for hate crimes legislation following two unrelated homophobic attacks, a state legislator is proposing adding sexual orientation to existing hate crime laws.
Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, (pictured) has submitted draft legislation even though the new session of the House does not begin until January. Holmes said that by filing early it could mean the bill would come to committee in the first week of the session.
In both attacks - one a murder and the other a beating - the accused claimed they acted because they had been provoked by sexual advances. The murder victim was 80 years old.
