Voicemail message suggests "open season" on gays

State Senator Dave Hansen says he's disturbed by a message calling for "an open season" on gays, on the eve of the debate over same sex marriage.

The suggestion came at the end of a crude and offensive voicemal left with Hansen's Madison office. "Maybe we should have open open season on those people, and just let 'em know how we really think," the caller said.

A staffer said they don't know the man's identity, but the call came from Hansen's district in northeast Wisconsin. The Green Bay Democrat said that as a practicing Catholic, he's "concerned there are people out there . . calling themselves Christians, with this kind of attitude. This time of year to be discussing something in such a negative light as this phone call was, is just amazing to me."

Hansen said he has concerns that the constitutional amendment would ban not only same sex marriage, but civil unions as well. "The way it looks today, it'll pass," said Hansen. "People will have an opportunity in November to vote on it (in a statewide referendum), but I wish they'd take a look at this very closely, because it's not as simple as one side is making it out to be."

...that when we remind non-LGBTs that our lives really are at stake, many accuse us of hyperbole?

I suppose it's going to take many, many more murders (after all, they don't pay attention to mere gay-bashings any more, do they?) to convince some of even the most well-meaning (but perfectly clueless) straight folks that Matt Shepard was not an anomaly.

5. When is America finally going to realize

These radical fundamentalist right-wingers are completely irrational and downright dangerous. They don't respect the rights of anybody and will stop at nothing to have their way. It is time to stop pandering to them and, as a nation, put our foot down. Once they take out the gays, who will be next on their hit list? Abortion doctors and their clients? Teachers of Evolution?
