Hope in Mormon Utah
Prom dream a dance step closer for gay student

WEST JORDAN - No promises. But it looks like - come prom time - Jason Atwood may be able to walk onto the dance floor arm in arm with his boyfriend without a note from his parents.

After four days of protests outside Copper Hills High, Atwood, 17, and his allies won a small victory Friday afternoon when Principal Tom Worlton agreed to re-evaluate the school's policy - issued last month - requiring same-sex couples to get parental permission before attending school dances.

With about a half-dozen additional supporters, the handful of Copper Hills students took to the street, across from the school, to challenge the edict, which Worl- ton saw as a way to alert the parents to the dangers their children might face.

1. wow, I grew up in West Jordan, never would have seen it as progressive

wow, I must say though that note from parents policy is ludicrous, but not surprising.

*ha, and it'd be fun to go back sometime, not only do I have the non-Mormon stigma that followed me through elementary and middle school, but would come back openly bi, with my bi boyfriend, sporting dem stickers. It doesn't seem to have progressed that much in the last 20 years, but who knows, maybe West Jordan will be the center of a revolution.

Seattle's more my kind of place.

2. Wow!
My little brother is a Mormon bishop in West Jordan. He hasn't said a word. The Church is still reeling from their excommunication of a young gay guy who then committed suicide. Maybe my affect on little bro is paying off.
