Did you buy into this Nationalistic bullshit?
If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

I served my country and received the ultimate punishment for being born the way I am.

This song and any mention of it makes me puke in my mouth a little.

These people don't want me to be part of their America. I truly doubt they want you in it either.

5. Chickenhawk Lee Greenwood...
...married four times.

Is this the best they can do?

But they trot this crap out time after time? (post 9-11)

Remember Easy Rider "They talk and talk and talk about individual freedom, but when they see a truly free individual, it's going scare them."

6. Never. What's more, nationalism is what the Nazis and dictatorships use to keep people in line
And it serves only to use the population as a suffering servant to the power that really controls such systems.

7. Let's go ahead and de-construct this.

Take out the chorus

Then let's break it down
......

Alright. We have a man who has worked since he was 15, 16, 17 years old. He's had shitty jobs, probably for a wage that barely kept him in an apartment in a bad neighborhood or maybe even a trailer park, though there's nothing wrong with that.

I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

Now this is where this screech gets confusing. He's admitting he's been lucky but in some way a Nationalistic symbol is the reason he's happy that he's making money off of idiots? What?

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

Yeah. I remember my acid trip across middle America too. Barely. LOL

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

Yeah, well, we know the rest of the screech. Fact is, from Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA, people are asking what's happened to this country?

8. That song is EX-clusive, not inclusive, and it always has been.
They don't talk about the women who died, or the kids with green cards who died either. They don't talk about servicemembers with HUSBANDS, either, regardless of their gender.

Plus, it's smarmy, with a cheap swell to it.

Don't blame "these people." Blame Lee Greenwood.

And if you had any doubt that the guy was just in it for a buck (or a LOONEY), he also did a version of the song for CANADIANS. Ka-ching!

No, I'm not making it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Bless_the_USA

No one can make you feel bad without your permission, you know. Don't give Lee Greenwood that authority.

10. Am having trouble, lately, figuring out what it is that unites us as Americans.
I know I'm biased; there's probably another perspective. I just can't perceive it anymore.

15. That and its general cheesiness
Puggies love to make much over symbols: the flag, magnets on gas-guzzlers (their notion of "s'portin' na troops"), all show and no substance. In all my 54 years of life on this planet, I've never once witnessed a pug doing a single truly patriotic thing. It's all bullshit, hype, goody-two-shoes frippery so they never have to do any real work.

When a symbol of freedom is placed above freedom itself, true freedom becomes an unobtainable illusion.

14. I wouldn't put too much stock in this one song
It's quite cheesy, yes, but it's almost so cheesy as to be beyond serious reproach. I think the real issue isn't the lyrics, but the fact that such a tepid piece has filled such an important opening in modern popular song (i.e. the rousing patriotic ballad that isn't a traditional number). It's surprising that it's never quite been replaced. I'm sure John Mellencamp in his prime could have come up with something similar but better and more nuanced. Maybe he's just a tad too liberal :)
