C.A. Tripp, the late psychologist, sex researcher and author of "The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln," which argued that Lincoln was gay, left a $1 million bequest to support Lincoln research by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
At least half of the donation will be directed to the Papers of Abraham Lincoln project, a massive effort to build print and electronic collections of everything written to and by Lincoln, as well as Lincoln-era writings about him and his speeches.
Tripp attended a history conference in Boston in the early 1990s at which a colleague discussed Lincoln's sexuality.
"It intrigued him," recalled Illinois state historian Tom Schwartz, who oversees the committee that controls the Tripp fund.
