Duquesne Student Sanctioned For Comments On Homosexuality
PITTSBURGH -- A Duquesne University sophomore who is in trouble for online comments said he's not backing down -- that he'd rather be thrown out of school than take back what he said.

"I'm stubborn. I stand up for what I believe in," said Ryan Miner.

Miner, a political science major, wrote against the forming of a gay-straight student alliance at his college.

He posted his thoughts at Facebook.com, a private Web site popular with students from across the country.

A complaint was filed against Miner because he used the word "subhuman" when writing about gay people.

1. I always wonder about..
people who get mad about groups that are open to others. Did he want to join? Was he going to be forced to join? Were they going to have meetings in his dorm room?

2. He Shouldn't Be Thrown Out Of School
If they threw every jackass out of college, there wouldn't be many students.

3. I saw that headline... and it is so bad...
since it can mean "approved" and "disapproved" and the reader does not know which until you read the story.

5. He certainly has a right to his opinion
but it doesn't appear to me that he has any basis for his "opinion" except blatant bigotry. Why should he expect to be treated with more respect than the people he deems as "subhuman?"

It seems to me that it is a typical ploy of the Right to scream First Amendment privilege for themselves while their statements are an attempt to deny that to others. Perhaps he should experience some of that subhuman status he likes to dump on others. . .subhumans don't get constitutional rights - isn't that what he intended by his post?

6. And I'd like to know just at one point does a person
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 01:28 AM by kevinbgoode
who "stands up for his beliefs" that other human citizens are "subhuman" have to be responsible for the reactions to his speech? These statements seem to me to reinforce his attitude that he is "stubborn" and "stands by his beliefs". . .well, what exactly are those beliefs? That other constitutionally protected citizens are subhuman?

Fine - he should be able to cope with the stubborn response he gets for those remarks. Otherwise, he didn't believe them as deeply as he claims. I think we let the wingnuts get away with this crap far too often without a response.

MY rights aren't up for his "opinion." Not unless he's willing to put his own up for the same scrutiny. This is a man who believes he deserves special rights simply because his peepee points in what someone told him is the proper direction.

7. Uummm, Duquesne University is a private Roman Catholic
university. Thus, it's private contractual rights. PERIOD. If a student violates (breaches) the contract then Duquesne can toss the student out on his head. End of story.

However, I am a tad bit surprised that a Roman Catholic university, of late, is actually doing something about offensive epithets spewed at gays, particularly since Rome has turned up the heat against gays!

Maybe Ryan Miner (the student) should try a public college or university b4 he cries aloud about his alleged first amendment freedom of speech rights.

YAWN.
