Senator Jim Forrester reported to be gravely ill in Gastonia hospital
Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 10:56 AM by Ian David
State Sen. Jim Forrester, R-Stanley, who represents Lincoln County in the N.C. Senate, is reportedly near death.

In a letter to Forrester’s friends and supporters Sunday night, the family was gathering by his bedside at a Gastonia hospital where the long-term senator was on life support.

”It all happened suddenly,” the family friend stated in an email. “Yesterday, they went to the mountains and Jim lost strength in his legs. The doctor advised him to come back to Caromont for some tests.”

“We all know how ill he has been, but he continued to work in the Senate. He told Mary Frances (his wife) that he wanted to go out with his boots on and support the causes in which he believed to his last breath,” the friend stated.

2. He is the one who sponsored the notorious NC anti-marriage bill
He engendered notoriety when he became the chief sponsor of the constitutional amendment for banning same-sex marriage in North Carolina in 2011. He has introduced this amendment at every session since 2004. After the Republicans won control of the General Assembly, Forrester's amendment eventually passed both houses and was sent to the plebiscite for a 2012 referendum.

Forrester earned a legislative victory in September when the Legislature approved a statewide constitutional referendum on whether to ban gay marriage in North Carolina. Voters will decide the fate of that referendum in May.

Forrester has pushed for the constitutional amendment for several sessions.
