So I finally spoke with the crazy cat lady...she said she's coming over...
Edited on Mon Oct-24-11 03:07 PM by joeybee12
I said no, he's happy where he is...she said I had no permission to keep the cat, that I was just holding him...I told her I took him with the idea to find him a home, and she kept quashing every option...I said the kitten is better where he is and to not call me again.

2. Good for you. She's crazy, though,
and will probably try to contact the police about your "theft" of "her" cat.

Most police will do a cursory investigation (if that) because cats are notorious for choosing their own people.

The woman sounds like a flake and a borderline hoarder.

17. Please don't let this wack job intimidate you..
If need be, get a restraining order to keep her away. Also, you may want to contact a lawyer for some legal advice. You have possession of the cat, you are feeding the cat and taking care of his needs. It sounds like she is threatening you to see if you will be intimidated enough to fold and give her the cat. Good luck and keep us updated.

9. Legally you own the cat if she gave it up no matter what the reason for doing so.
If you want, contact anyone who might work with her in regards to cat placements and get them to back you up. I think she is going to try to break in or steal it. Bummer situation really.

If she doesn't stop with the harassment.

18. If the police show up don't say anything at all that makes it sound like it was her cat.
And I would not tell the police that you took him to find him a home - because that would make it sound like he is not 'your cat'.
Be careful of what you say - the least the best.

If 'she' shows up at your door, don't open it - she sounds like a nut.

19. The police showed up apparently when I wasn't in...
Then I got a threatening phone call...I'm more convinced she should not have this kitten...she's nuts...even if I have to find him a new home so when they ask me where it is, I say he's gone, it'll be better than going to her.

23. I contacted Animal Control and said she has 5 cats is looking for more,
and I don't think she can care properly for them (the county limit for owners is 3 cats per household). Also, I am trying to talk with someone at the police department, they told her it was a civil matter, basically meaning they wouldn't get involved, but i still want to talk to someone because she's nuts. A woman who I work with, her ex-husband is head of the police union, so I want to talk with him, but so far no luck.

24. She sounds like a nut. As a CCL and cat rescue person myself, some advice?
1. Take the cat to the vet. Save all the paperwork. Get a license from the county. Get a microchip. Take the cat in to a groomer and save the receipt. Sign up for the frequent shopper card at the pet supply store and put your cat's name on the account. Whatever you can do along those lines, you just want to have as many slips of paper with your name and proof that you're spending money on the cat as possible.

2. If there's any possibility she's going to come by with the PD, make sure everything is spotless (or as close as is reasonable) food bowls are filled, litter is freshly scooped, the bag of expensive food is sitting where it can be seen, a few cat toys are seen lying about. Engage in a little stage setting if you need to, just make sure you're visually communicating that yours is a great home in a way that a stranger would easily appreciate.

3. Was there any documentation about your taking the cat from her? Do you have emails, voice mail, etc? Would she have any from you?

4. Can a credible third party back up your side of the story?

5. If all of your ducks are in a row, consider blocking her number and filing a harassment complaint. Definitely do so if she shows up at your house.

6. Under no circumstances allow her any contact with the cat.
