In Immigrant Areas, a Culture Clash Over Gay Marriage
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 11:51 PM by alp227
Molly Blooms, a Victorian-accented Irish bar in Sunnyside, Queens, recently raffled off a free same-sex wedding reception, with a three-hour open bar, a D.J., a photographer and a horse-drawn gilded carriage to deliver the winning couple to the festivities. The bar’s owner thought the idea would be good for business and for the largely working-class and immigrant neighborhood.

But some in the community disagreed.

Neighbors said they would boycott the bar. Bloggers posted reports of past health violations there. Larry Yang, the Korean-American owner of a hardware store next door, said he resented such a public promotion of same-sex marriage. He said many among the large number of Korean-American Christians in Queens felt similarly but feared that if they spoke out they would be demonized by a liberal majority.

“If that horse-drawn carriage rides by my store, I will make sure my kids do not see it,” Mr. Yang, 45, said. “I am worried about what kind of message gay marriage is sending.”

My comments:
1. Maybe the social conservatives will actually like these kind of immigrants, despite a recent poll revealing that over half of Tea Party conservatives generally view immigrants as a threat. But this article mentions homophobic Turkish immigrants, so I guess the right-wing "sharia takeover" narrative...oh wait this isn't Free Republic.
1a. You hear that, Cenk Uygur?
2. Mr. Yang might wanna take a trip to South Korea someday because males with long hair is getting quite popular over in East Asia. I mean if you listen to Asian pop music you probably have seen how the male singers have Justin Bieber or Beatles hairstyles.

2. ~Culture Clash~.....

Is just some "pretty words" to hide behind.......

Because we all know the "words" that should have been used are: "hating bigot".......

It's so funny..... if someone "even uttered" such nonsense about Koreans, everyone would be up in arms...

But it's cool to hate on Queers..... Too bad Mr. Yang is so provincial, as if he was taken out of his little community... and placed in a group with other Queer haters....

I dare say, it would be Mr. Yang who would no doubt be the odd man out... as the haters would despise him as well.....

I know it would be a "culture clash" for me to listen to the "Yangster" pontificate on any of his ideas about life as well....
