Cher Defends Chaz Against Transphobes

In a series of messages sent via Twitter, Cher defends her son Chaz Bono's decision to do Dancing With the Stars against transphobic commenters and says the majority of viewers will love him.

Bono's casting in season 13 of the ABC competition series has drawn numerous complaints from some of the show's more conservative viewers, who have targeted him for being transgender.

In the first tweet, Cher writes, "lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS!This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it."

She followed with, "I support him no matter what he chooses 2do! God! will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts ! TG Chaz has an Unlimited supply."

1. Go Mama Grizzly! KNR
That's a real grizzly mama defending her brood...not that 2-bit quitter from Wasila who can't even remember the names of her brats.

4. my biggest problem with chaz is....
dude lose some weight. i don`t know if it`s hereditary or not but he`s overweight.

he does`t have a chance in hell to get very far since the folks at home get to vote. remember the ever expanding palin got to the final last year.her partner had to drag her through most of those routines.

after 12 years of not watching this show i just might watch an episode or two.

6. For his health he should,
but there are a few more difficulties for FtM's than others - starting with deliberating gaining weight to disguise female attributes (before transitioning), which sets up a pattern that is hard to break. There are also issues balancing hormone levels. I can't recall if Chaz decided to have full bottom surgery (including a hysterectomy) or not, but I do know that toting around those extraneous parts - which do excrete a level of female hormone - makes maintaining that balance even more difficult.

Yes, he should lose weight, but it's not as simple as 'eat less/exercise more'. My son (who has not been able to afford bottom surgery yet, but has moved to the UK and has an appointment - finally - with the gender reassignment center, so there's hope . . .) is a vegetarian, eats no junk food, consumes little to no sugar, little to no gluten, and walks at least five miles a day just getting from home to school to work. He's overweight. Not as much as Chaz, but more than he should be. He's struggling to keep it off.

8. You're welcome.
I hope I didn't sound testy - I wasn't, really, but on rereading (aside from noticing a handful of egregious spelling errors) I did sound it. My apologies. I'd also like to clarify that my son didn't move to the UK because of the NHS (though he's NOT knocking it!) - he went there to go to school. Access to the NHS is afforded to him as a student - civilized nations do things like that!

I appreciate the kind thoughts on his surgery. He won't know anything more until December, when he has his appointment - it may be many more months before he actually has the op, though I hope not. They understand that it is dangerous for a transgendered person to tote around female reproductive organs while taking testosterone, as it significantly increases the risk of developing cancer in those parts. Here, insurance companies don't care - the hysterectomy is considered 'non-essential'/'cosmetic'/'elective' surgery.

Makes me so angry I could chew tacks.

11. Chaz had a hysterectomy for health reasons way before transitioning
Read his book, as of now he has not had bottom surgery but is open to it. Good luck to your son!
