Old truth in young gays
(This is sort of a "good news" "bad news" article. The good news is - well the article! The bad news is, the attempt by some in Wake County to try and keep counselors from helping kids with sexual orientation issues.)

Old truth in young gays

By DENNIS ROGERS, Staff Writer

Did God make a mistake? I don't mean with giraffes, penguins or even the 1976 AMC Pacer. He obviously created those for the giggles.
I mean with gay people.

There's a proposal before the State Board of Education that says school guidance counselors and social workers should know how to deal with all sorts of discrimination students may face, including sex roles as well as race, creed and national origin.

Professionals say it would help counselors and social workers do a better job if universities would include sexual orientation and gender identity training in their education counseling curriculum.

That reasonable suggestion set those who proudly proclaim themselves guardians of "traditional family values" howling with outrage.

7. Wasn't in the movie - I believe it was in the third book
"Life, The Universe, and Everything".

While stranded on Earth (thousands of years in the past), Arthur screws up the programming of the computer just by being there.

8. ah - thanks.
I've never read the book either. I'm not much into reading "comedic" works, though I love SF&F. Would you recommend the book for a true SF fan?

9. Hell, NO, I wouldn't recommend it to a true SF fan
(especially one who knows that the SF is the true shorthand).

However, if you are a fan of british humor (Monty Python, Are You Being Served?, the Black Adder, Mr. Bean), then I would recommend it. There is really nothing scientific about it.

But it is a quick read. Well, all five books in the trilogy are quick reads.

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe, and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Mostly Harmless

(The fact that I can recite the list of books just from memory really shows how loony I am)

10. I remember watching
Monty Python in the "early 70's" - I didn't "get it". Then just a couple of years later - after I went to college - one late late after partying Saturday night - I suddenly GOT the humour, dontcha know.

But reading wise, I don't think it would really work for me.

What else do you read? (I just started a thread in science fiction trying to start a discussion of SF literature, btw.)

4. he's lucky if it's just
Letters!

The fundies all have their panties in a wad over this one. They really hate the thought of giving any "validity" to GLBT.

They'd rather the kids hang themselves than "be gay".

They don't seem to care that the largest portion of teen suicides is because some kid THINKS they might be gay -when in truth they probably AREN't but just going through typical hormonal teenage growth with a passing thought that could be interpreted as gay.

But because they can't even talk about it with ANYONE - they don't know it's not an issue - and even if it WERE - nothing to die over. Though they probably figure (and sometimes rightfully so) they're parents would kill them if they really were gay.

12. The whole state

**There's a proposal before the State Board of Education that says school guidance counselors and social workers should know how to deal with all sorts of discrimination students may face, including sex roles as well as race, creed and national origin.**

They're being challenged by The NC Family Policy Council:

Who We Are
Founded in 1992, the North Carolina Family Policy Council is a nonpartisan, nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to the preservation of the family and traditional family values.

As a statewide organization focusing on public policy, our offices are located in the city where most of those policies are made—the capital city of Raleigh. With our office located just minutes from the North Carolina General Assembly and other state offices, we monitor much of the activity of state government and follow policy debates on issues that affect the family.

We work closely with other organizations and often provide speakers and educational seminars to a variety of groups on various public policy issues. Members of the press contact us frequently to gain our perspective on many different issues.

As an independent 501(c)(3) research and education organization, the North Carolina Family Policy Council is supported entirely by the generosity of our donors. We are engaged in a battle to retain the traditional values that have been the mainstay of western civilization. These are the same values which supported the establishment of the United States and which are embodied in the Ten Commandments and in other founding documents of our nation.**

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION???? I think they should have to reregister as a political lobbying group (Actually a HATE GROUP!)

13. yeah
I grew up in Charlotte. The spirit of old Jesse helms still lives! I am amazed, however, when I visit my parents...to see rainbow stickers on cars...NEVER would one see that back when I was growing up.
