Cazadero resident celebrates gay pride at White House

Lani Ka’ahumanu, a decades long advocate for bisexual rights, has been invited to a White House reception June 29 honoring the LBBT community on Gay Pride weekend by President Barack Obama. She is bringing a Hawaiian lei for him to wear.

“It has been okayed by the Secret Service,” said Ka’ahumanu in a telephone interview. “Now I am working on getting permission to put it on him myself.”

While Ka’ahumanu is in no way associated with Obama’s reelection campaign she pointed ou, “He and I are both hapa – of mixed race – but I ‘pass’ and he doesn’t.” The two share a Hawaiian background.

“While he went to Punahou, the fancy school, my mom went to Kamehameha public school,” said Ka’ahumanu.

While Ka’ahamanu expresses some dismay that Obama “has not stepped up to the plate as much as I would hope” he has made some strides forward and she is “deeply honored and excited” to be going to the exclusive reception.

Cazadero is very close to where I live. This whole area is a LGBT hotbed. Lots of LGBT folks here, and it's a popular gay tourist destination as well. I'm in the Russian River area of Sonoma County, CA (wine country).
