Lawmakers, who were scheduled to gavel out for the year on Monday, now look set to stay in Albany for several more days.
Seeking to push same-sex-marriage legislation over the finish line, Cuomo officials had discussions with Republicans and gay-rights advocates about adding to the proposed bill more legal protections and exemptions for religious organizations.
The governor's office is hoping that those revisions would be enough to win over ambivalent Republicans and secure final passage for gay marriage, which already passed the Assembly.
Mr. Cuomo spent the day in private meetings with legislative leaders and other lawmakers, including three Senate Republicans who are thought to be potential yes votes on a bill.
