Charles Barkley On Gay Athletes
Charles Barkley On Gay Athletes

"First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play. Any professional athlete who gets on TV or radio and says he never played with a gay guy is a stone-freakin’ idiot. I would even say the same thing in college. Every college player, every pro player in any sport has probably played with a gay person. They always try to make it like jocks discriminate against gay people. I’ve been a big proponent of gay marriage for a long time, because as a black person, I can’t be in for any form of discrimination at all." - Retired NBA star Charles Barkley.

3. Thanks, Sir Charles.
Real question now is...why, at once point, was he talking about getting into politics as a Republican?

4. His grandmother asked him that, too, telling him that Republcians were only for
rich people. Then he told her, "I AM a rich person!"

But then he turned against them when they got really ugly during the Bush administration (even uglier than before).

9. That is a big misconseption
The poster that replied to you isn't accurate. He asked his grandma "Why are we Democrats". He grandma said (paraphrasing) that the Republicans are the rich people's party. He said (again paraphrasing) "but we're rich".

That little story has been used repeatedly to show that he was a Republican when Barkley was on Larry King saying he never was and was explaining that story. He wanted to get into politics as an Independent. He said "Republicans are full of it, Democrats are a little less full of it."

6. I think he hits on something very important...the media would make a big deal of
a player coming out...his teammates would not.
