5. It baffles me why it's considered relevant

I can't see any use for even bringing it up except to smear cross-dressers by association. If it is not evidence of mental illness in the general case, there's no reason for it to be considered evidence of mental illness in his case.

It seems that the repulsiveness of his crime is making people susceptible to having him used for other propaganda purposes - this reminds me of the AP's attempt to label him a 'pot-smoking loner', as though he has a lot in common with other pot-smokers and other loners.

But I suppose I shouldn't expect any better of the Times.
