Reid To Bring Defense Bill To The Floor With DADT Repeal Amendment
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 08:10 PM by ClarkUSA
Key Senate leadership and Administration officials this evening met with representatives of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), and the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAPAF). The officials told the groups that Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama are committed to moving forward on repeal by bringing the National Defense Authorization Act – the bill to which “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal is attached – to the floor in the lame duck session after the Thanksgiving recess. Further the Majority Leader and the President made clear their opposition to removing the DADT provision from the NDAA. Information on the exact timing and procedural conditions will be announced by the Majority Leader’s office.

McCain has promised to filibuster if DADT repeal is attached to the NDAA. It looks as if President Obama and Majority Leader Reid plan to call his bluff.

2. I have my fingers crossed. Both of my Senators are on board with
the repeal. I have no influence with any others.

4. I guess Republicans want a two week debate and to be able to propose a large or unlimited number of
Amendments to the bill. Harry doesn't want to do that. I'm not sure what kind of poison pills they might try to add which is what I'm sure they are worried about along with just the amount of time it will take up when they need to get a bunch of bills done.

Hopefully, Harry will do it and just keep them through Christmas or Thanksgiving to get everything done. Running up against Christmas last year got the Republicans to stop some of the delay tactics during the HCR debate.

5. I think the repeal will be in the bill so it can be traded for that jet Obama doesn't want. n

IOW - the DADT repeal will be removed along with the jet.

8. I think McCain is more than a little weird. I've never understood people that
get all worked up because someone is gay. To me, it reflects poorly on the person being the bigot. It's one thing to get a pass as a dinosaur, but it's another to pardon a bigot. Now, perhaps there should be percentages as to how straight or how gay a person is ... It all gets damn ridiculous in my book.

I think this nation has more important things to be concerned about than DADT. Somehow many other countries are fine with gay people serving, but not this place, we have to make a big F'en deal over things like this. Absolutely ridiculous.

9. I'm still skeptical, but hoping for the best.
And if McCain insists on filibustering, I want to see a bunch of Dems screeching "up or down vote" to every media outlet they can find (a la the Repukes in the 2005 judicial nominee showdown).

The public is with us on DADT repeal. I hope our Democratic Senators don't back down on this.

Fingers crossed.

12. Well, Reid seems to have at least one vertebra.
Good on him for saying so, but I'll believe it when I see it.
