No civil unions for Hawaii

Calling it "marriage by another name," Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle has just announced that she will VETO her state's civil unions bill. Adding insult to her bigotry, invited to the announcement was the now-retired Hawaii Supreme Court Justice who first got the state's marriage equality ball rolling in 1993.

1. Fuck her.
She could have spared the melodramatics and vetoed the bill months ago.
I am sure she planned to veto it all along.

I was actually saving up for a trip to Hawaii but after this, I'll be spending my dollars elsewhere.

If she wanted to veto the bill, she could have done it soon after the bill was originally passed. The only reason for her to drag out the decision for this long is because it makes good political theater, and nothing else. She gained stronger support from the wingnuts while keeping up appearances of being a moderate Repuke to everyone else, all with a future run for political office in mind, to be sure (Senators Inouye and Akaka are both pushing 80). I don't believe for a second that she actually considered signing this bill or allowing it to become law without her signature.

In the rare cases where you have a state legislature that is progressive enough to pass a marriage equality bill, and the state has a Repuke Governor, the bill is DOA when it arrives on the Governor's desk. Every. Single. Time. Schwarzenegger did it to California twice, and Christie mentioned that he would do the same if the New Jersey legislature ever gets its act together (although it looks like the courts will have to remedy the inequality there). Now Lingle can add her name to that list of bigots (Hawaii's wasn't a marriage equality bill technically, but you get my meaning).

I, like you, was planning a trip to Hawaii. I was planning to go next Summer after I graduate with my Masters degree. It looks like I'll be heading to a different and more gay-friendly destination instead. I bet Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are beautiful in June.

3. Funny you mentioned those places
Someone on Pam's House Blend mentioned Iceland and Sweden along with Spain, Portugal, Vermont (I think).

I planned to go once I get my bachelor's degree which is in about 2 years which gives me plenty of time to save.

What are you getting your master's in? (If you don't mind my asking)

4. Those are places I've always wanted to visit.
The fact that they all have marriage equality laws is a huge plus for me and, since they are so far north, I bet summertime would be a great time to visit.

I'm getting my Masters in Accounting, and I can't WAIT to be done! Ugh. What area are you studying for your Bachelor's degree? :hi:

5. Ooooh good one to get a masters in.
I wish I was good with numbers or had an interest in the medical field.

In any case, I'm getting my bachelors in Sociology and I'm going to grad school for a master's in Higher Education Administration.
:hi:

6. Working with numbers has always been easy for me.
Math was always my "easy A" subject as a kid, so I guess Accounting was a natural choice.

I have a cousin who has taken the same path you're on - BS in Sociology, MAEd in Higher Education. He has been working as a math teacher and football coach at our old high school for a number of years, and is looking to move into a position as a Principal as soon as something opens up in the school district. He says his work isn't easy, but it's as rewarding as it is challenging. Education isn't for everyone, but if it's something you have a passion for, then I'll bet you're on the right track.

Best of luck in your studies, and avoid Hawaii for your post-graduation trip! :hi:
