Doctor Treating Pregnant Women With Experimental Drug To Prevent Lesbianism
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 09:03 AM by ehrnst
<snip>Pediatric endocrinologist Maria New—of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Florida International University—isn't just trying to prevent lesbianism by treating pregnant women with an experimental hormone. She's also trying to prevent the births of girls who display an "abnormal" disinterest in babies, don't want to play with girls' toys or become mothers, and whose "career preferences" are deemed too "masculine." </snip>

1. I think the heat damages some peoples brains down here.
One docs office we've passed every day of our visit has a sign larger than his office board that says "God Bless America" and is flying a HUGE flag outside. I have seen a few pro Obama cars, so I know there is some hope.

2. Doctor had sign that he would not treat
anyone who voted for Obama. Forget where this was in Florida. I agree with you about the sun frying some people's brains in Florida. I see it every day.

7. where, which doctor?
seriously. I would like to know - because that's not just unethical and in violation of a dozen insurance and regulatory guidelines, but also illegal to require a voter registration card as a a prerequisite for medical treatment.

4. Looks like they're now treating it, along with "uppityness" in women, as "birth defects."
I LOVE the Hastings Center commentary on the issue:

"Needless to say, we do not think it reasonable or just to use medicine to try to prevent homosexual and bisexual orientations. Nor do we think it reasonable to use medicine to prevent uppity women, like the sort who might raise just these kinds of alarms. Consider that our declaration of our conflict of interest."

10. An irony here:
"It seems more than a little ironic to have New, one of the first women pediatric endocrinologists and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, constructing women who go into “men’s” fields as “abnormal.”

Republican Woman Syndrome: I'm the exception to what I'm telling you is appropriate behavior for women. I can benefit from the gains feminism has brought women, but you should avoid them at all costs.

WTF. I agree -- chilling.

So, homosexuality is a birth defect,a nd the problem lies with someone's orientation, NOT institutionalized bigotry?

Wow.

16. The more I read your post, the angrier I get -- how DARE you?
How dare you refer to being gay as a "naturally-occurring birth defect"? How dare you advocate Eugenics for this "defect"? It's would be bad enough if you posted it in GD, but in here?

No wonder i never post on here anyway. WTF.

17. so homosexuality is a birth defect?
So much wrong with your post. You might want to read some ecology about how homosexual behavior is COMMON in many many animal populations ESPECIALLY when there are large populations of said animal.
HOMOSEXUALITY IS A NATURALLY OCCURING behavior that helps to curb populations...

37. Dan Savage did simplify the situation, as a friend who audits research points out.
Edited on Thu Jul-01-10 08:56 AM by ehrnst
Here is her response to me concerning Dan's take on the study:

"As someone who audits clinical research, I think this is a little more complicated than the way Dan Savage (whose writing I enjoy) is reporting it. This is a potential treatment for a specific condition. The Principal Investigator is merely speculating about the affect the treatment may have on behaviors in the future. Also, the word "abnormal" means something different in a scientific publication than it does in other types of writing."

She had read the article that Dan is commenting on:

http://www.thehastingscenter.org/Bioethicsforum/Post.aspx?id=4754&blogid=140

"The majority of researchers and clinicians interested in the use of prenatal “dex” focus on preventing development of ambiguous genitalia in girls with CAH. CAH results in an excess of androgens prenatally, and this can lead to a “masculinizing” of a female fetus’s genitals. One group of researchers, however, seems to be suggesting that prenatal dex also might prevent affected girls from turning out to be homosexual or bisexual. "

"They go on to suggest that the work might offer some insight into the influence of prenatal hormones on the development of sexual orientation in general. “That this may apply also to sexual orientation in at least a subgroup of women is suggested by the fact that earlier research has repeatedly shown that about one-third of homosexual women have (modestly) increased levels of androgens.” They “conclude that the findings support a sexual-differentiation perspective involving prenatal androgens on the development of sexual orientation.”
