Background: Some time back, Baton Rouge's mayor backed a proposal brought before the city council called "One Baton Rouge." This was little but a declaration that Baton Rouge would not tolerate discrimination in any shape or form. Of course, all of the fundies bad-mouthed it- saying that it was tantamount to announcing that Baton Rouge was a haven for child molesters ( :banghead: ) and all of the other usual stuff. One representative even told a friend of mine (when he called to complain of her nay vote) that she didn't think it was necessary because there were probably only 100 gay people in Baton Rouge. Fucked up logic, and even more fucked up statistics!

Anyhoo- the local business report has a poll about bringing the resolution back. It's at the upper right side of the page linked below, so if the spirit moves you....

Edited to add: It didn't pass (by one vote, IIRC) the first time, so many want this to be pushed through again.

The poll question asks if the council should take another vote. Is it because it passed the first time and they're consider repealing it? Or because it didn't pass the first time and they want to try again?

Also, I am curious to know at what threshold that representative would agree that anti-gay discrimination is not OK? 101 gay residents? 102? 105?

Even if there is only one gay resident of Baton Rouge, discrimination against that person should NOT be acceptable, and supporting a declaration saying so harms no one.

11. That was half of what pissed me off about that comment...

Firstly, since when do anti-discrimination measures get put into place to protect a majority? Fucked up logic...

Then- 100 gay people in a city of about 250,000? 0.04%? Ummmmm.... No. Absolutely wrong. There are WAY more than 100 gay men in the bar on an average Friday or Saturday night- I can personally attest to that.
