Newest Miss America: AIDS awareness yes, gay marriage, no
Newest Miss America: AIDS awareness yes, gay marriage, no
By The Associated Press
02.01.2010 3:38pm EST

(Las Vegas) The newest Miss America, whose uncle died of AIDS, said during her interview for Miss Virginia that she believed marriage was between a man and a woman.

Caressa Cameron, 22, is the first black Miss America since Ericka Dunlap in 2005 and a broadcast journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Cameron won the title and a $50,000 scholarship Saturday night after strutting in a skintight yellow dress, belting Beyonce’s “Listen” from “Dreamgirls” and advising parents to limit video games and television when asked about childhood obesity during an onstage interview.

1. broadcast journalism? do we have a "Sarah" of color in the making?
This is NOT racist, it's just a thought that struck me when that coupled with Bill Maher's observation, "Of course they are Republican. If they were Democrats they would be in college."

2. Is anyone surprised?
By and large (yes I know exceptions exist) beauty pageants do not attract participants who celebrate progressive values.

Pageants draw in participants who are materialistic, overprivileged, elitist and ambitious in all of the worst ways. So why would you be surprised that she holds these views?

7. pageants usually attract
vapid, not overly bright contestants. why would anyone care what this airhead has to say.
she was correct about AIDS funding, wrong about marriage equality...she gets a 50 out of 100.

5. If they reported it correctly, she was right about one aspect of her marriage belief. . .
it was between a man and a woman. The enlightened ones in society seek only to expand her too narrow definition.

8. Ahem
"Cameron said she believed marriage should be between a man and woman because of her religious beliefs, but she didn’t think there should be laws against gay marriage."

10. Sorry...
I posted the exact title of the article.

And after Ms. Carrie Prejean I'm not sure I believe 'but she didn't think there should be laws against gay marriage'.

Perhaps it is true, perhaps it is not. You'll forgive me, I hope, if I err on the side of doubt.

12. What Difference Does It Make What She Believes?
She said she didn't think there should be laws against gay marriage. Why would you possibly want more from anyone - especially someone so utterly useless and inconsequential as "Miss America" - than that?

I don't give two shit what ANYONE believes, as long as they don't try to stand between me and my rights.

Likely none.

As you said, as long as she doesn't stand between me and my rights. And I hope it stays that way.

Nothing against who she is or what she said, after all she is entitled to her beliefs. I'm just tired of people jerking away the rights that each person is entitled to.

(And apologies if it doesn't make sense. It's been a very very long night here at Casa Will.)

19. I Will Definitely Grant You the Right To Be Sick Of People And Their Bullshit Beliefs
Lord knows, I've had more than enough religious nonsense shoved down my throat to last a lifetime. However, at the end of the day, people proselytizing is just annoying, nothing more. It only becomes serious if their bullshit god-nonsense gets legislated into law.

9. this is apparently what she said:
"Cameron said she believed marriage should be between a man and woman because of her religious beliefs, but she didn’t think there should be laws against gay marriage."

You know what, I'm fine with that. She has her personal beliefs but doesn't believe those believes have to be made law. Heck if only everyone were like that.

11. If She Believes Gay Marriage Should Not Be Outlawed...
I can live with that. And yes, she has a right to her beliefs.

14. Me, too. It's like Kosher food. Some say it is required by their religious beliefs, but they...
don't make everyone eat it.

would not have voted for her, but having said that, you can not draw a parallel between her and Carrie Prejean, who is substantively deficient in so many ways (even downright ugly), and the fact that she's done much work on behalf of PWA's mitigates the bad stuff. (Not that you were doing that, I'm just making a general observation in light of your own valid comment. :) )
