we didn't see much criticism of them, even though they were a large base of support for the anti-gay marriage measure.

we SHOULD be color blind, but not all of us are. setting up two standards for homophobes is just another form of racism.

classify the achievements of a country like Uganda right? There is a reason that civilization forgot this country... because it forgot civilization; and it seems as it is forgetting it yet again. american exceptionalist wouldn't be a good label. i don't see anybody saying uganda sucks AND the US is superior to everybody. THAT would be american exceptionalist.

saying the US is superior to uganda, does not make it american exceptionalist. heck, most civilized nations are vastly superior to uganda when it comes to civil rights in general, and glbt specifically.

as i have often pointed out, the only american exceptionalism acceptable at du is what i guess is "reverse" american exceptionalism.

iow, as long as the US is always compared disfavorably to canada, the UK, europe, etc. than that's perfectly fine. we are the exception that SUCKS is ok. we are the exception that is super sweet, not so much.

i was assuming that most commenting were american, and since there were comments about it being third world trash and such they were probably comparing it to america. therefore I stated that american exceptionalist would be better than racist. I didn't say that it was a spot on definition, but better than racist.

Furthermore, I believe wholeheartedly American exceptionalism, in the correct form, that is, what it actually means. I would never say the things you said above, I hope that you weren't assuming that I was this... 'reverse' american exceptionalist? I agree that the tone of many here is always US bashing, but I hope you weren't putting me in this group.

and i agree with your point, just that american exceptionalism isn't really appropriate, because the statements themselves were not US-Centric, and i have no idea if the posters were even from america or elsewhere.

you could call it "western civilization centric" since practically the entire base of 1st world western civilization would not support laws criminalizing homosexuality.

i think the more important thing is that homophobia be denounced, regardless of the gender, race, or sexual orientation of the homophobe. the fact that some people (not you) get all weak kneed when one dares call out homophobes who happen to be (god forbid) black (and note NOT african american, since ugandan citizens clearly aint) is pretty fricken sad.

let's judge on idea, on content of character, not race.
