The hate crimes bill was the bottom of the barrel least the Democratic Party could do. It required no political capital, no effort, no putting themselves out there for us. It was, at bare minimum, the "Why we vote Democratic rather than stay home" effort.
Now, if the President and Congress actually decide to expend some political capital and actually go to bat for us on the so-called "hard" stuff like DADT and DOMA, then they'll deserve our monetary support.
I don't see why we should lavishly reward politicians for doing something even moderate Republicans generally had no problem with.
When they fight for us as hard as we've fought for them, then they can have some of that cash. Until then, try gay charities, local youth shelters, etc. And, if you'd like to get double the impact, write a nice note to the DNC saying something along the lines of "In honor of passing hate crimes, I'm donating $X in the DNC's name to Y charity. Further pro-gay action by Congress and the President will see that money more directly contributed to Democratic fortunes."
Don't let them off the hook. They are going to milk this bill forever. "See?! We do stuff!" Don't let them. The HRC and others are going to fund-raise like crazy off this non-effort and spend the next few years explaining to us why we have to wait some more now that we got the barest movement forward.
