Bea Arthur leaves $300,000 to organization for homeless LGBT youths

Late "Golden Girls" star Bea Arthur has left $300,000 of her estate to the Ali Forney Center, an organization that supports homeless LGBT youth, according to a press release from the organization.

"We work with hundreds of young people who are rejected by their families because of who they are. We are overwhelmed with gratitude that Bea saw that LGBT youth deserve as much love and support as any other young person, and that she placed so much value in the work we do to protect them, and to help them rebuild their lives." says Executive Director Carl Siciliano.

48. That would be a great article! And believe it or not, Rosie O'Donnell would be right up
there at the top of the list. I can't find a link but I remember hearing that she gives an enormous percentage of her income to charities.

Bill Gates also comes to mind.

50. Watch the first three minutes of that video.
You'll be surprised to learn that Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Harvey Korman are all there in the Star Wars pantheon. You likely won't be able to watch more than about the first three minutes. It's worse than the last four Star Wars films combined.

28. The Ali Forney Center -
http://www.aliforneycenter.org/

As the visibility of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people grows in our society, more and more LGBT teens are finding the courage to come out of the closet.

Tragically, as many as 25% of these teens are rejected by their families, and many end up homeless on the streets. Homeless LGBT teens are more likely than straight homeless teens to be subjected to violence on the streets, and in the homeless shelter system. They suffer from inordinate rates of mental illness, trauma, HIV infection and substance abuse.

The Ali Forney Center (AFC) was started in June of 2002 in response to the lack of safe shelter for LGBT youth in New York City. We are committed to providing these young people with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met, and where they can begin to put their lives back together.

AFC is dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of homeless LGBT youth in the United States with the goal of generating responses on local and national levels from government funders, foundations, and the LGBT community.

47. By all accounts, it would seem Bea Arthur was a first rate human being.
She was a great actress, with the ability to make people laugh which isn't really all that easy to do. She brought class to everything she did while on Earth, and her kindness now that she's gone reminds us all of what we've lost.

Thanks for the laughs, Bea. Rest peacefully, and thank you for the many gifts you left us all.
