BREAKING: Bill Clinton comes out in support of marriage equality

BREAKING: Bill Clinton comes out in support of marriage equality
by: Pam Spaulding
Tue Jul 14, 2009 at 12:15:00 PM ED

Former President Bill Clinton has come out in support of same-sex marriage.
After speaking at the Campus Progress National Conference in Washington, DC, on July 8, the former president was asked if he supported same-sex marriage. Clinton, in a departure from past statements, replied in the affirmative.

Clinton opposed same-sex marriage during his presidency, and in 1996, he signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which limited federal recognition of marriage to one man and one woman. In May of this year, Clinton told a crowd at Toronto's Convention Centre that his position on same-sex marriage was "evolving."

Asked if he personally supported same-sex marriage, Clinton replied, "Yeah." "I personally support people doing what they want to do," Clinton said. "I think it's wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that ."

1. If other DUers claim I lose credibility because my opinions on some issues change with time,
Edited on Tue Jul-14-09 11:50 AM by Deja Q
the same ones damn well better give their same attitude toward former president Clinton.

(Ironic, because while some changed, others never did, and nobody really listened in the first damn place which was why I changed my tune for a long while in the first place...)

Which is doubly interesting, I was thinking of a technical topic rather than a personal topic when I first made this response... life is so weird and cool! :D

4. Not sure if this is a positive endorsement of legal equality.
"...stop someone from doing that."

I mean, is he saying that he supports legal marriage rights for same sex couples?

6. Is this like Potter Stewart admitting that Bowers v. Hardwick was his biggest mistake?

7. You know something, I tried. I applauded and gave him credit in the LBN thread
without any further comment, and then the Clinton apologists piped in with their lies and revisionism, and I'm sorry, I LIVED IT, okay, I am not a child - I remember every single Clinton year, from the very beginning. And I'll be DAMNED if I'm going to let those lies be perpetuated here or in a thread about the GLBT community. Doesn't mean people can't disagree, but I can't talk about him within the context of GLBT issues and not get angry.

What "lies and revisionism" are we talking about?

9. You must dislike Al Gore, also...I mean, he was exceedingly bad on GLBT issues
a while back, but now he's come out in favor of gay marriage...if he can revise his views, others can...besides, I'm not seing "Clinton apologists" well represented on that thread...I'm seeing Kool-Aid drinkers who can't see straight when you say Clinton (either Bill or Hillary).

12. I lived through all that during Clinton also and it sucked...
...but that was 16 and 12 years ago...I also think we GLBT people had lower expectations then about what we could/should get than we do now....that's a good thing, and my pint is essentially that we're in a completely different time now.

13. Okay, yeah, I agree with you there. It's true. We do expect more now
than we did then. I guess that means things have progressed. :)
