Obama Faces a Second Major Test on DOMA
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/uncategorized/obama-faces-a-second-major-test-on-defense-of-marriage-act/

As you know, the Obama administration has infuriated gay rights activists by filing a legal brief in support of the Defense of Marriage Act, against a gay couple married under California law that is challenging the act in Federal court.

The Obama stance earned a scorching editorial in today’s New York Times that pilloried him for backing off his campaign promise to protect gay rights, and the controversy shows no signs of abating.

What’s lesser known, however, is that a second big test on DOMA is looming for Obama — and the next shoe could drop this month. This second case is being closely watched by gay rights activists to see if the Obama administration takes a similar tack, suggesting a pattern of reneging on his campaign promise.

The second case concerns a lawsuit that the gay-rights defending group GLAD filed in Federal court in Boston, on behalf of eight married couples and three surviving spouses “who have been denied federal legal protections available to spouses” under DOMA, as GLAD puts it.

1. I feel like it's the bottom of the ninth and you need a comeback.
You'd like to have your big hitters coming up to the deck, but it's just the guy who hits .189.

We need someone to come though in the clutch, but I get the feeling that Obama is going to flub this.

2. I'm crossing my fingers.
Call me a fool if you want to. At this point, what harm is there in clinging to hope?

4. However heartfelt and righteous, getting good cases to test/overturn law should trump symbolism.
But we have heat on every second of this debate, like enacting a pint of Obama's blood to prove his worth.

The only responses I seem to get here is about not understanding this issue as overriding all else and being homophobic by saying it's okay to wait.

5. Of course they will argue the law
It's the law for starters, and that's the only way it can go to the Supreme Court which is the entire purpose of that law suit. Let the courts decide so it cannot be rewritten later.

It's like a defense attorney for Charles Manson cheering when he's convicted. And no I'm not comparing gay people to mass murderers.

And sorry for intruding into the safe space, but that's where the article is.

6. First of all,
arguments did not have to be carried to the extreme equating gay relationships with incest and pedophilia. Secondly, the DOJ did not have to defend the case at all. It could have been thrown out. This is according to a former White House aide and attorney Socarides.

7. And that's the point that those who choose to wear blinders refuse to see.
Obama's DOJ went out of their way..with relish to defend the indefensible.

And Obama could with the stroke of a pen put a temporary stop on all dismissals from the Armed Forces under DADT. But he won't do it. Not that he can't, he won't.
