2. 53 votesout of 141,000?
I don't think so. I don't do polls. They are not scientific and are not a reflection of DU as a whole.

4. DU has 4-5k active posters
That number includes posters who have been TS'd BEFORE their first post even.

11. Insignificant
Just because a few people decided to vote in this poll and make equal rights THEIR least important issue, does in no way constitute the plurality of DU. You can't stretch it that far....even with the wildest of imaginations! Now, had the OP stated that is was the plurality of those who chose to participate in the poll, he would be correct. And, it is not surprising, to me at least, that a number of them chose it as their least important issue. I just see it for what it is......53 people voiced an opinion when they were asked. They do not speak for the majority, just themselves. Period!

FWIW, I am very much for equal rights and the full legalization of gay marriage. I do think it is a travesty that there is still so much opposition to it. But, that is my opinion, and I do not speak for the majority, either. I don't like others speaking for me any more than I like speaking for others.

21. It's a fairly large statistical sample.
50-odd people out of 5,000 regular posters is 1%. Gallup polls frequently poll about 1,000 people out of millions, far less than 1%.

26. Statistical but not scientific....
....therefore insignificant. Who is to say that 50% of those who participated are not homophobes? A lot of people, like myself, do not participate in these polls for that exact reason. It's no different than CNN having a call in poll. Those with an agenda are quick to participate, and others who are really not interested do not. The sample you get in no way represents any known group because their bias is unknown. We may very well have had 23 trolls voting in that poll. You don't know, I don't know, no one does.

I just don't like people to classify the plurality of DU by the results of a poll that is in no way controlled. If you don't like the results, I suggest giving up on the poll approach. It tells you absolutely nothing except that there are some people who disagree with your POV.

5. I see why this poll got locked, but it does present an interesting question
Part of governing is prioritizing major initiatives. I see the factors that go into this as:

1. Amount of political will/political capital to take something on
2. Possible political ramifications
3. Internal capacity to do the work
4. Desire to control media narrative behind an issue

Anything else?

12. Fuck them
If they consider our rights so insignificant then why the hell should we bother with them? How many times must we be marginalized by them before we understand they're no better than the Republicans; they're just more subtle about their hatred of us? They want our votes, money and support but other than that they just want us to STFU and stay out of their way. I know my wife and I are tired of the abuse and I imagine many others are.

We have all the same problems and concerns the rest of you do, plus we have the added issue of not having equal rights. To you that's "one issue" but trust me, it isn't.

46. What would be just poetically would be if
the 45 of those who voted 'homosexual rights' as least important gave birth to gay or lesbian children, like the next Walt Whitman or Martina Navratilova.

But I would, of course, never wish such a parent or family on someone I consider a kindred spirit.

So I guess you really can't win sometimes.

50. it's not homophobia. It's apathy.
And self-centered thinking. They got theirs, so who cares about anyone else's. Republicans do that - pull the ladder up after themselves.

I'll bet you if you ran a Prop 8 Version 2 that took away THEIR rights to marry, they would suddenly place equal rights at the top of their agenda.

I just hope they remember when it's time to put aside our differences and work together to round up the vote that we will have more important things to do.

It DOES explain why there is so little sustained interest in our issues on the part of President Transformational, the DNC, and such.

Too bad they can't seem to see anything in it for themselves. I always thought that a core DEM principle was that inequality was *everybody's* business.

We live; we learn.

56. I've never seen the linked thread, but it's a tiny voting sample.
There were only something like 23 votes in the "gay rights" choice, and while that plurality is disappointing, it was a very small poll by DU standards.

However, it is evidence that there is a small, but loud, obnoxious contingent of posters here who seem to be completely unsupportive of gay rights. Some of the worst get tombstoned, but I'm sure there will always be sock puppet accounts of the worst offenders who vote their bigotry.

However, it's a damn shame gays at DU have to tolerate such dismissal right here at DU.
