Facebook Group Forms To “Kill Out Dem Batty Man”

Facebook has become a ubiquitous communications and organizing tool encompassing a whole range topics. Many of the groups are based on entertainment, hobbies, religion and spirituality, history, politics — you name it. Even hate groups advocating the murder of gays and lesbians.

One such hate group with a Facebook presence is the “Kill Out Dem Batty Man” group. “Batty Man” is Caribbean slang for gay men. Most of the group members appear to be from Trinidad and Tobago, although the Jamaican person who tipped me to it identifies the patois dialect as Jamaican. The Facebook group is listed under “Beliefs & Causes.”

I don't frequent Facebook and I haven't read their TOS, but surely they have some kind of prohibition against this kind of thing, don't they?

I think it would be wise to reconsider allowing a group to form on Facebook that want to kill a group of people, regardless of how Facebook or anyone else feels about the LGBTQ community.

My fiance, who is bisexual, told me that when she visited Jamaica a few years back with her than girlfriend, that she never encountered such vile homophobe. She and her girlfriend had to claim that they were sisters to avoid physical violence.

Enjoy your shitty little islands, and see what happens when your bigotry and hatred starts affecting your number one export-tourism. Enjoy your third world countries, ya pricks.

what with all the weed they smoke. Sounds pretty shitty. I have heard that the Guadaloupe and Martinique homophobia was terrible, it exists here in the metropole but I think to a lesser extent than in the USA and Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean is even more open minded than the metropole.

Well except some of the Rasta musicians. Not related to the topic b/c I agree that Jamaican homophobia is awful (have seen it in person), but just correcting the generalization. Rastas are more like the hippes of Jamaican society (kind of outcasts) and based on close rasta family members, they are much more open-minded than most Jamaicans.

They were sexual prudes at the time, and had very strict gender roles for males and females. Africa and any other country that has a african decent were not homophobic and embraced same-sex people until the British came.

Filled with a wide variety of peoples and cultures who had varying degrees of tolerance for same-gender expression before colonization. The majority by far were accepting within certain social parameters, like most indigenous world cultures. Note that I said "same-gender expression" because the concept of sexual orientation is a very modern, Western invention.

I was clueless about the turn it had taken. I saw "The Harder They Fall" in college and I like ska and that was about the extent of my knowledge. It's incredibly sad. And two of the activists who are trying to turn things around have been killed. Facebook also has a good page on this, too.

As I said up-thread, I sent him a msg on FB saying he was disgusting for posting a page advocating violence toward gays, and he replied back and told me to F off.

Well, I logged into FB tonight and he has now sent me a total of FIVE messages! I reported him to FB for harassment. The last one sounds somewhat like a threat, but I think he just means he plans to repost the group.
