Do you ever wonder when people say...
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 02:02 PM by La Lioness Priyanka
significant difference is not made by politicians but by public outcry, what people are doing to encourage and foster this outcry? or whether in reality, they just want us to not criticize democratic leaders?

i mean, honestly, i dont expect obama to do much on gay rights. in other areas, i hope he succeeds and i do support him.. (healthcare, economy, IP) but everytime i hear this on du, ithink its just a justifaction for bigotry. Like we havent really made our case to the american public, so we cant expect to hold our political leaders to task.

do you often get the same feeling?

(As for all my posts in the lgbt forum this is for GLBT adn their strong allies only)

1. I agree - I've heard many many people say we cant expect Obama to use the bully pulpit for GLBT
rights because he would be using "political capital" and he apparently does not have enough to spare. However these same people do not show any signs of pushing for GLBT rights other than the occasional cheerleading of GLBT progress that they did not engage in or help create. Its like those friends you have that show up for the party after a project but never showed up during the project but have many opinions about the project despite being absent. Its an out growth of "I have gay friends" so I am supportive or a good person (none of the above as we both know is related).

Oh and just for reference:

Obama's open letter to the LGBT community February 28, 2008

"As your President, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws"

4. Just this morning I was discussing the president and marriage equality
with my hairdresser while getting my hair done.

I don't even remember how the subject came up, but I actually had to explain to her what "marriage equality" means.

3. It is also a convenient vehicle to blame Gays
for the passage of Prop 8. "You didn't do the required outreach"

5. I Hear This a Lot....
but in the end, it will be political leaders in either the legislative or judicial branches that will be able to make the sweeping change we need. It is likely to have to be done by one of those branches of government rather than the electorate--unless you want to wait another thirty or forty years--personally I doubt I have that many years left to wait for my full rights.
