assistance from LBGT sisters and brothers
do any of you know of a comprehensive list of decent therapists that can be found on the web? i've tried searching, but there is no resource that i can find. perhaps i am overlooking it.

it's even hard to write to ask this, but i need to talk to someone. what's even worse is that i am in the midwest and anything that i can find locally is all CONVERSION therapy.

i don't need that!

if you want to reply in personal box or here- that is fine.

thanks,

ropi

1. Psychology Today has an online directory

And, they list gay friendly ones.

Also, email/call your local Unitarian Church for recs, and see if your area has a GLBY Yellow Pages.

4. The American Psychological Association (APA) may be helpful.
The APA help line:
http://locator.apa.org/

Here's a San Francisco Bay Area organization that may be able to help you with a referral to someone in the midwest:
http://www.gaylesta.org/

Will this help get you started? :hi:

6. thanks..
it seems that everything within the closest range is over 60 miles away. it's daunting to be locationally challenged.

for those who are in the field, is a LCSW better than a PhD or MD? i ask this because i went through my first 4 years of PhD work and one issue that I have is that I don't know if I should seek out a PhD specialist or not.

Nah, closest pflag chapter is over 60 miles away.

I take it West Lafayette is next to Lafatyette.

LCSWs have to hold to a national standard.

8. No, LCSW not better, not as educated.
PhD (I am one) and MD are two very different things. You might consider seeking out an MD to see if you need some pharmaceutical assistance.

If you PM me your location, I will find you a psychiatrist in your area.

9. See if Purdue has a counseling center, and if non-students are
allowed to use it. Some universities allow you to go to their counseling centers for a fee.

11. Does your local city have
a GBLT weekly?

Depending on where you are, you may find listings in the classifieds that will be close to you.

17. Midlodemocrat's post above notwithstanding,
there are many excellent therapists who hold the LCSW (or LICSW) credential. The credential is a minimum standard for practice and includes both academic and supervised practice requirements. Unfortunately, the terminology varies from state to state--LICSW is for Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. I assume Indiana has some similar credential. Some L(I)CSWs do have doctorates, either Ph.D. or DSW (Doctor of Social Work). The minimum requirement is a Master's degree, usually MSW.

BTW, I went to Purdue and am familiar with the area. You can also contact Wabash Valley Hospital at: http://www.wvhmhc.org/index.html.
They're accredited and would therefore not go pushing "reparative therapy" on you. They have practitioners from all the mental health disciplines and, if necessary, could prescribe medication.

Hope this is helpful. Drop me a PM if you're so inclined and let me know how you're doing.

18. Thank you!
To all of you, thank you so much.

I was able to call Purdue and get a referral, which has helped immensely. While they don't help anyone who is a student they were more than willing and understanding to assist with aiding me and giving me a fair number of local counselors who are LGBT affirming.

I feel a lot better now knowing this and I even feel a sense of peace after having spoken to the Centre.

To those who posted- I appreciate the kindness and care. For those who sent me personal messages, I thank you and appreciate it as well. <3

19. I'm so glad! I was just sure there'd be help available in a university community.
You sound so much better in this post than in the OP. It's especially good to hear you say you feel a sense of peace. I hope you find a counselor, and any other support you need.
