Obama nominates lesbian as HHS official (former co-chair of Equality Kansas)
Greenlee to develop policy for aging issues
By CHRIS JOHNSON, Washington Blade | May 4 2009, 11:01 AM

The White House announced Friday that President Obama has nominated a lesbian to work on aging issues in the Department of Health & Human Services.

Kathy Greenlee, the new nominee, was nominated as the department's assistant secretary for the administration on aging. The administration on aging is charged with advising the federal government on the needs of older people and developing policy to promote their welfare.

Greenlee's appointment is subject to U.S. Senate confirmation.

Greenlee has served as secretary of aging in Kansas since 2006. She previously served as Kansas' long-term care ombudsman, assistant secretary of aging and a general counsel at the Kansas Insurance Department.

6. This straight woman salutes President Obama!
I am so proud of you, Mr. President. It's about time (way past time actually) we have more acknowlegement of the talents and contributions of gays and lesbians. Bravo!

8. That's good news. K&R
It's crucial that policies on aging include the perspective of the gay and lesbian community, and the trans community too.

Without the protections of marriage... with job and wage discrimination... with large out-of-pocket medical expenses that made saving for retirement impossible -- well, there are lots of folks out there feeling especially anxious as their "Golden Years" approach.

12. I love Kathy
In addition to the offices listed in the article she was also our Democratic Party Chair back in 2004. I got to spend some time with her because we were both delegates to the convention. She's a hard worker and a wonderful woman.

16. Is this really a first?
Doesn't he have a lesbian official in his administration already? I haven't heard anything about a gay man in his admin. though.
