What's this about Top Gun being gay?
I mean, aren't all buddy films essentially gay? I've recently learned that Top Gun is considered to be especially gay, though. Help me out here.

7. It's got lots of locker room scenes, guys in towels, shirtless, playing vollyball, etc.
and not many women.

2. It looked like a two hour ad for the International Male catalogue. Even Pauline Kael thought so.

"Test Pilot" with Gable and Tracy is "the one where Myrna Loy and I are in love with Gable," as Tracy described it - accurately.

17. William Mann's book was so full of made-up stuff I don't know where to begin..
but I'll begin with the stories he made up about the contents of their FBI files.

If he'll lie about a public document...

18. oh it's gay all right --
the whole vibe -- the objectifying of male beauty -- especially for the mainstream that was new.

buddy films speak for themselves.

the camera work treating male faces like -- lingeringly -- that was new -- on and on.

22. Very interesting. So that's why Goose has to die.
Goose has to die so that Maverick can become straight and pair up with Kelly McGillis. It makes sense.

Maverick has a date with the girl but he can't drag himself away from the naked volleyball game, so he's very late to his date, and nothing happens during the date anyway.

27. It really is
And yeah, you have a point about buddy films in general being fairly gay, but Top Gun is in a class by itself. Let's just say that movie was my introduction to the whole concept of slash, at the tender age of 14. Just...holy god that movie is gay.

Of course, now that I'm older and far less naive, I see gay everywhere in movies, even when I don't want to. I maintain Ouiser and Claree from Steel Magnolias were at the very least hetero life partners.

30. Watch out. I brought this up last year about the same movie and...
was arrested by the syntax police for saying "gay movie" instead of one of their pre-authorized terms.

Then when I had the audacity to not genuflect before their superior gay sensibilities, then a couple of them lobbied Skinner to ban me. I was excommunicated, and my gay ID card as well as toaster oven were confiscated.

Ever since then, I don't drop in here much. So much for "inclusivity".:eyes:
