Oregon Senate Severs Gay Bills

Legislation that would create civil unions and at the same time provide protections for gays and lesbians in housing and employment have been split off.

Civil unions were dropped from the bill, allowing the civil rights measures to proceed on their own. At the same time, a coalition of Republican and Democratic senators said they would draft a separate civil unions bill and would hold a public hearing on it next week.

Supporters of the move said that it would allow passage of at least one aspect of the original bill even if the other failed.
