Bishop Gene Robinson: Supporting Obama doesn't mean we don't critique him
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 04:26 PM by demdog78
Openly gay Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson accepts the claim that his invitation by President-elect Barack Obama to lead the prayers for next Sunday's pre-inaugural celebrations at the Lincoln Memorial role was planned long before controversy arose over the selection of anti-gay Pastor Rick Warren to deliver Tuesday's invocation.

Robinson had previously called Warren's selection a "slap in the face," adding that "the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know." However, he told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Wednesday, "So many of us in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community were just stunned, really, by this choice, but I must say that in the intervening days, it appears that Barack Obama is being the person he told us he was ... by including all voices."

"Being a supporter of Barack Obama doesn't meant that we don't critique certain decisions that he might make," Robinson explained. He later noted, "I do feel very confident that this president-elect understands us and stands with us in the issues that are important to us. Of course, we're going to hold his feet to the fire. ... I long for a government that respects the dignity of every human being."

More people should look at it this way, and they will when it's "their problem"

4. Uncritical support is not support
Ask any parent. Robinson is a wise and brave and well spoken individual. Glad he's getting some sunshine.

8. What baffles me is this...
Obama ASKS for the criticism. He has openly said he expects and wants to hear from people when he pisses him off. He has purposefully appointed people with differing opinions so he can get different views.

I believe that his request stretches beyond his cabinet picks... I believe he also wants to hear from "the people" when he fucks up.

That IS part of his platform, him being the anti-Dubya. Right?

Why people cannot see this is jut baffling.

5. Excellent...

I wish many of the DUers who hang out in GDP would understand this!

6. Good Lord, such rampant common sense.
Of course, the Bishop appears to be reaching out to Obama, not to that-suckhole-who-shall-remain-nameless.

7. Uh, oh.....
How...refreshing!

Let the cognitive dissonance resume in some sectors, though...there are supporters, unfortunately, that just can't handle any critique at all.

We'll hear from them soon enough. Be prepared to be called everything from a Freeper to a PUMA, simply because you take issue with Obama on this matter and refuse to get into lockstep and sing Kumbayah.

9. OH... that already happened the other day.
Got really ugly, and had to request the thread locked. It's funny though. You write something... something small, and to the point that you don't think can be manipulated, and the next thing you know... BAM! People are reading things that aren't written and calling you every name in the book.

Whatever. Fuck em. :banghead:

10. I've caught some myself.
I won't back down, though. Right is right. You can't treat people differently simply because they're wired differently.
