Supporters of Prop 8 Sue to have names removed from doner rolls.. Funding Hate should be secret
http://lezgetreal.com/2009/01/prop-8-supporters-want-to-hide-their.html

Hello? Hypocritical? Are you there?

<snip>

On Wednesday the supporters of Prop 8 filed a lawsuit to change California's campaign finance laws and to have the Secretary of State remove the donors from it's website.

California's current campaign finance laws date to the Political Reform Act of 1974, and is a voter-approved initiative that established disclosure requirements for candidates and campaign committees.

According to the story from the Associated Press, James Bopp Jr., an attorney for ProtectMarriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage said,

"No one should have to worry about getting a death threat because of the way he or she votes. This lawsuit will protect the right of all people to help support causes they agree with, without having to worry about harassment or threats."

Go and read this, it will make you want to scream

4. That quote is a distortion... votes are private. Political donations are not.
It is funny how the party of "personal responsibility" chooses victimhood so readily.

9. Great point... they are really worried more about FUTURE H8 Votes
<snip>
One of the things I found interesting is that the lawsuit also asks that the two groups along with "similarly situated persons" would not have to file the final reports on Prop 8 or any future campaigns the groups may take on. That is one of the major reasons they are filing this suit. They believe it's going to be hard for them to fund future campaigns because people are going to be too afraid to give money.

12. Bingo!
The want to hide behind a veil of secrecy.

Related story...my (former) dentist and his wife signed the Amendment 2 (Florida) petition. Knowthyneighbor.org requested/got/published the names of the people who signed to get this ugly amendment on the ballot.

When my partner and I confronted him, he was aghast that anyone would be privy to that info, and babbled about how they signed on the way out of their church service, blah, blah, blah.

He lost us both, my aunt and uncle, and their three children and their families business. And we told him why.

I refuse to support my own oppression.

11. Political donations are not.
Excellent point ... especially when it comes to donations to Bill Clinton's library ... but then, the Repukes demanded that that list be made public knowledge ...

You know what, Mr. Bopp? Gimme a jingle on the day that I don't have to worry about a death/violence threat or harassment because of how I live my life and with whom I fall in love. Until then- you and ProtectMarriage.com can suck my left nut.

8. Kicker here - "They believe it's going to be hard for them to fund future campaigns"
Here is the real issue, they want to hind this because now that people are looking they fear that others will not donate for the h8 they push....

13. Oh please. We're more likely to get death threats contributing to democratic candidates than they
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 03:02 PM by PelosiFan
would be to contribute against our civil equality. What a bunch of bull. I'm glad they're wasting their time and money though. That's a small comfort.

15. Their votes are still private - unless they scream from the mountaintops how they voted.
Financial actions have consequences. Period.
