Sandra Bernhard on the Rick Warren bullshit.
http://www.sandrabernhard.com/

Change?
I am sitting today in New York City in disbelief.

After the past eight years of twisted lies and
cynical abuse by the Bush administration.
After the long hard fought campaigns of
Clinton, Obama and McCain. After Obama’s victory and the euphoria of the election… here we are once again stunned by the shock and awe of total
stupidity.

How can Barack Obama, the first black president
of the United States of America, invite one of the most divisive
religious leaders in the world to invocate his inauguration?
This is the day the world was supposed to change, for the better, the more compassionate, inclusive, forgiving, thoughtful.

To choose Rick Warren, who actively
fought the gay communities legal right to full protection
of our constitution is completely reckless. This is a person who compares gay marriage to that of a brother and sister union.
This is a man who vocally
diminishes the legitimacy of gays.

The inauguration is no place for this religious fundamentalism
in any way shape or form.
We can have that conversation later in the proper setting.
This is the day that is supposed to restore the true meaning
of brotherhood and the rights for all Americans.
To lift the veils of secrecy and hatred and the ugly
legacy we have left behind! This is how Barack Obama
chooses to begin his legacy?
I am deeply angered and terribly disappointed at this turn of events.
I think Mr. Obama needs to reevaluate this decision
immediately.

It is unacceptable!

I stole it myself, a couple of weeks ago from a DU member , who stated in a post that "everything was fine until the gays went nuclear"

12. The companion piece to the invocation is the headline speech on MLK day
that's just as troubling. More divisiveness and more exclusion for gays.
Good for Sandra!

23. Quoting Sandra:
Edited on Fri Jan-02-09 08:50 PM by truedelphi
"This is how Barack Obama chooses to begin his legacy?

"I am deeply angered and terribly disappointed at this turn of events.
I think Mr. Obama needs to reevaluate this decision immediately."

Corporate politicians do things like this. We need an overhaul of our nation's political processes.

Geithner, Rubin and Summers to keep the lid on the economy so trickle up rewards continue, while trickle down pain occurs as well.

Gates at the helm of the military so that the Endless War can continue.

Vilsick there to help keep Monsanto running its heinous seed and food policies.

Obama's courage in speaking out for those who happen to be Palestinian in the land of Evil -- that courage strangely evaporating as his need for AIPAC money gave him a winning edge in the final days of his campaign.

A cosmetic change but little else. Like (Shall I say it) lipstick on a pig.

So much for change.

28. The fundies, especially the extremist
within their group have been continually included and catered to in our government by the repugs - such as Reagan, Bush Sr., and midget-brain junior. The poor, widdle, evangelistic babies, the man on top had had to invite one of them to his big party or they might feel excluded........for once, and cry. ;(

Hmmm, crying evangelist, haven't we seen that before? LOL Oh ya, it use to be that tall, greasy, skinned evangelist (can't think of his name) with the glasses who was always getting caught with a hooker, then he would get down on his knees on television, crying and begging for everyone's forgiveness. Yup, better invite one of them to the party, or they'll be balling their eyes out! And it'll be all over the news for weeks......

You're right, so much for change. I don't see change happening, not for gays. I see a President (Elect) selling out. Nothing new there.

29. Gays are only one part of the forgotten soup of excluded humanity
Edited on Sun Jan-04-09 04:05 PM by truedelphi
Last night I watched the trailer on the Milk Movie.

Was deeply touched that in the trailer, Milk is saying, it is not just about gays, it is about US - the elderly the poor the blacks -- the you name it.

Any and everyone who is excluded (Don't remember if he mentioned the homeless vets, the vets suffering from illness and old war injuries, who remain unemployed etc but I'll mention them in case he didn't)

As someone whose efforts over the last three years to find work were very much thwarted by my age (mid fifties) I found that very consoling.

31. You're right, it's not just the gays
who have problems to deal with including being shafted. However, we are the one group that is systematically being singled out and targeted on a legislative level, not to mention all the different levels of homophobia in general that we have to deal with, for discrimination. And our enemies have become a well oiled, very effective, political machine. They've had decades to work on it.

And I personally believe they won't stop. In the long run, if they continue to succeed through politics, our worst enemies - the religious zealots, after they've been able to legally prevent gay Americans from being able to marry through state by state laws, they will go after everyone else by pushing a complete break down of the separation of church and state. That is what I think is at the core of what is happening. The hatred towards gays is what they're using to fuel their political agenda. And it works. No surprise there; we've been one of the most hated groups of people through much of history.

I hope they don't succeed past the damage they've done already. And I really hope that all groups, such as the poor and our vets, receive the help they need through the new administration. I'm not so sure it will happen, but I hope it does.

Dixie-chicked my ass. Sandra is standing up for her rights and ours and everyone's. Melissa is acting like a spoiled idiot sell-out. How is being an ignorant sell-out and being criticized for it anything like the RW criticizing the Dixie Chicks for criticizing Bush?

If anyone sounds right-wingish here, it's you with that lame analogy.

40. I loved it the one time she was on Air America's Majority Report
That was Janeane Garofalo's show. They had a lot of celeb guests and Sandra was one of the best. At the end of her interview, Sandra said she lived right near AAR's studios, and she'd be happy to come back anytime. But she was never on again. It always annoyed me that apparently they never bothered to invite her back. Sandra would definitely make a good host or cohost for a liberal radio show.
