Labor Amicus Brief Against Prop 8

http://prideatwork.org/page.php?id=615

Proposition 8 is currently under appeal in the Courts. We are part of an endeavor to sign as many labor organizations on as possible to an Amicus Brief supporting overturning the proposition.

Please help us reach out to as many union locals, Central Labor Councils, constituency group chapters, and any other local labor organizations as possible. Urge your leadership to sign on to this Brief.

Here's what to do:

1. Urge your local labor leaders to sign on to the labor amicus opposing Prop 8.
2. Have them send an email or letter to William Sokol, labor attorney for the amicus. (See below for sample correspondence.) Organizations must sign up by January 15.
3. Be sure to include T Santora, Pride At Work Co-President, in this correspondence: tsantora@cwa9000.org

Thank you so much for your efforts to repeal Prop 8 and restore marriage rights for all!

Here's a sample:

4. K&R sounds awesome...

is this to support a labor-specific legal argument? I've heard that UPS will only provide health benefits to "married" spouses.

5. In general Labor supports GLBT rights

Not every union member feels this way. But there are members that vote against their best interests. Marta and I have lost 2 close GLBT friends to suicide. One in 1980. The other in 2007. We still miss both of them terribly.

To allow significant others in hospital rooms, to have health coverage, etc. are civil rights. I have posted many times in this forum. I just hadn't been in for a while.

The AFL-CIO has a constituency group "PRIDE @ WORK" for GLBT issues. Stop in sometime: http://prideatwork.org/page.php?id=5

7. I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your friends....

hearing about suicides is one of those things that makes my blood boil, and there are posts elsewhere on the issue of "exploitation" which I think many Americans can also relate to.

Thanks for the links, I will be sure to check them out.
