Mexico Launches Campaign To Fight Homophobia
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/04/042605mexico.htm

Despite opposition from the Roman Catholic Church the Mexican government this week launched a radio campaign to fight homophobia.

The ads were prepared by the National Council on AIDS Prevention and Control under a law signed by President Vicente Fox in June 2003 that outlaws several types of discrimination, including bias based on sexuality. The law also requires federal agencies to launch campaigns to promote tolerance.

The ads are running in seven cities with plans to extend them to 12 others and eventually nationwide.

1. So Mexico is more progressive than the US
never thought I'd see the day.

Can any of yall imagine this going on in the US, in today's cuckoo political climate?

3. There's less homophobia in the Latino than in the Anglo community.

Speaking as someone who's 1/2 Cuban and 1/2 Mexican, I've never quite understood why so many assume that Latinos are ultra-homphobic...

5. My experience, such that it is,
is that Latinos are far more homophobic than Anglos. I was with a friend of mine, walking down a street in Chicago, minding our own business, when a car full of latino kids jumped out and bashed him. Not saying that's a valid incident from which to generalize, but for what it's worth.

At any rate, what does it matter who's more/less homophobic? Homophobia sucks and that it's being combatted in Mexico is good! Looking forward to the day when we can follow Mexico's lead on this issue...
